Solid Yamaha power for stereo lovers

The Yamaha R-S700 is designed for people who like spending time listening to music. Yes, there's an input for a turntable, and a tape deck. Of course, there's an input for a CD player. But this receiver has a few other cool tricks up its sleeve, too.
  1. Conclusions About the Yamaha R-S700 Stereo Receiver. The Yamaha R-S700 is a welcome addition to Yamaha’s lineup of receivers. It’s also a refreshing change of pace from the typical multi-channel AV Receiver. Many multi-channel units, despite having a cost of well over $1,000, do not do justice to music.

Luxurious CD sound

Lots of us still like listening to music on CDs. This receiver's CD Direct Amplification feature creates a balanced internal signal path to boost the CD input's signal-to-noise ratio for better detail and clarity in your music.

Little details matter

Heat is the enemy of clean sound. The R-S700 features tandem heat sinks for more efficient cooling so your favorites sound like they were meant to. And the gold-plated speaker terminals and RCA jacks ensure high-quality, corrosion-free connections.

And to increase your listening space this receiver offers dual zone capability so you can connect and power speakers in another room and even control the system with a second included remote (IR repeater required, not included.)

I've had a Pioneer A/V receiver for some time now and have barely scratched the surface of all that it has to offer. It has presented me with some small issues and I replaced it with a Denon AVR-3300w from Crutchfield and it proved defective. It is now on its way back to VA after an unsuccessful attempt to reset it. I decided to invest in a Yamaha R-S700 two channel receiver with proven technology.I know I can use all of its features! I remain with Crutchfield because of the customer service. [ Albert Jul 30, 2017 ]

Yamaha is known for good quality audio gear at this price point and therefore a great value. This unit has a discrete output stage with a substantial power supply for high current output which makes a big difference in sound quality with good source material and quality speakers. I was looking to replace my 25 year old old Sony receiver (may it rest in peace). A home theater surround system was not required. I only wanted a 2 channel stereo amp that could handle a 4ohm load as it is running up to 8 pair of ceiling and patio speakers via 2 Niles speaker selectors. This was the best price as most amps that can drive a 4ohm load are upwards of a $1,000. [ GEOFF T Nov 28, 2016 ]
old school manual knobs and power. [ DAVID Oct 11, 2016 ]
Our Yamaha receiver finally died after 25 years. We still play our vinyl albums so we need something that can do that plus play our CD's. Also need 2 zone speakers which this can do as well. Seems to be many more features that will be a plus too. I confirmed with Wolf before I ordered so I am confident this will fit the bill. I was looking for a solid stereo receiver with a phono input. I don't need network connectivity, more than stereo and an output for a sub, or lots of bells and whistles. I know Yamaha components from past experience. This appeared to be the best option for my needs. [ John Aug 06, 2016 ]

I have long been an absolute fan of Yamaha receivers. I have upgraded my speakers recently to Klipsch RP280 F towers. I was driving them with my current Yamaha 50 watt receiver. I am an old-school music aficionado. My Bose Stereo Spatial Control Receiver, purchased in 1981, finally died. Because I have Bose 901 speakers, I needed a receiver with pre-amp jacks to run the speaker equalizer through. I've had other Yamaha equipment and, besides the fact that this seems to be the only unit on the market with pre-amp jacks, I'm very comfortable with the quality and sounds of Yamaha. Thanks, Crutchfield, for you help with this purchase. [ Alan D. Feb 07, 2016 ]

What Bluetooth adapter is compatible with the rs700? Yamaha does not make the yba10 anymore and yba11 is not compatible.
[ Ad Aug 16, 2017 ]
I use the Audioengine B1 Bluetooth adapter. It is the best in both range and quality of sound reproduction. It is more expensive than the rest of the herd but worth every penny. Works great with iOS & Android and has aptX codec near CD quality listening. Search Crutchfield site for it.
can a tv be run thru this receiver for the audio ?
[ david Aug 03, 2017 ]
Well yes & no. You can run standard stereo inputs,(right & left Into auxiliary rca jacks) but no hdmi input or multi channel hook ups. This receiver is primarily 2 channel sound reproduction. And does that very well.
Yes, you can hook up a TV to the receiver. But there are no digital inputs on this receiver, only RCA analog cable inputs. So if your TV has RCA outputs, then it will run to the receiver very easily. However, most new TVs no longer have an RCA output and they only have digital outputs such as a Toslink. If this is the case, you must buy a digital to analog converter (DAC) in order to connect to the receiver. You plug a toslink into one end of the converter and it has RCA on the other side of the converter They run about $30 bucks on amazon or Ebay for a decent one. That's what I had to do. Great receiver and strong sound- much better than my old Onkyo receiver.
David, yes it can. I have a set of RCA cables from my TV going into LINE 3 on my receiver. So much better than the TV speakers.
can an ipod be used in the cd jacks ? If not how do I listen to an ipod with this receiver ? I noticed a subwoofer jack, does this need to be a powered subwoofer ?
[ ardie Aug 03, 2017 ]
Yes you can use an ipod andno you don't have to use a sub woofer
I use a headphone jack to stereo cable. Stereo goes into one of the line inputs and the headphone jack goes into the iPod (or anything with a headphone jack, really) and then just toggle the input to match whichever line you plugged into.
Yes it can. You need to plug the iPod cradle into either the CD or Tuner jack in the back. Set the Input (front) to whichever jack you plugged the iPod cradle into. Set the iPod in the cradle and start your music.
I have a 1/8 in. adapter jack for my phone, laptop etc going into the line 1 jack. I imagine it would work in any jack. Not sure about the sub woofer.
yamaha rs700 specs say output is100 watts into 8 ohms. are these rms or peak watts?
[ thomas Jul 25, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. The RMS rating is 100 watts. You can find this information on the product page 'Details' tab under 'Features and Specs'. Hope this helps.
Why is this priced so much lower than yamaha's a-s701 ? On paper, the specs look identical but the r-s701 actually has more functionality as it includes a receiver. Thanks in advance.

Can the volume of A and B speakers when run simultaneously, be set to different levels?
[ Dam Dec 26, 2016 ]
no
No, but you could get a Niles SSVC-4 to accompany your receiver. That will allow you to change the volume of each individual speaker. That is what I have.
Can I plug an Android phone into this to listen to Pandora?
[ Sis H Dec 14, 2016 ]
Sure. Get a 1/8' stereo phono plug (phone side) to female RCA plugs cable (stereo side.) Use that to connect your phone to the aux input on the stereo.
ps: I read through some of the answers to related questions, and remembered that it is also possible to do this via Bluetooth, search out that answer for another alternative. The question was from Sherry C dated May 15, 2015, and was answered by Phillip A.
I don't think that you can make a direct digital connection. You can buy an adapter that will let you connect the headphone output from your phone to one of the auxiliary inputs on the back of the receiver, that is what I do with my iPhone.
Sis..don't believe this unit has any access for smart devices. I bought this model for its very basic design, so my wife would be able to operate. I would call Crutchfield tech support [they are excellent] and inquire about a possible adapter/converter.
The instructions say you will need an optional universal dock to connect a phone but it only mentions iPhones as being supported. It does you can connect a Bluetooth device with an optional Yamaha YBA-10 Bluetooth wireless receiver, but it does not mention Android as being supported.
Where is this product made? What power voltage? Can I connect 4 speakers on it? Can I add equalizer to it?
[ Estoy Nov 20, 2016 ]
The power in USA and Canada is 120V. I am using mine as a preamp only going through a DBX 15 channel equalizer then to a Cerwin-Vega 1800 watt power amp pushing 4 Cerwin-Vega speakers that have a total of 6 - 15 inch woofers and also 2 - 10 inch sub woofers connected to the sub woofer out jack on the R-S700. I've had this set-up for about a year and it still sounds great!
You can hook up 4 speakers on it and add an eq that's how I have it
Will this run some old school Fisher speakers? They are 8 OMS. My old one died. Having a hard time finding something.
[ Karen Oct 29, 2016 ]
Yes it will. Great receiver, good specs, very clean sound, and at a good price. You might want to consider replacing the Fishers too. Yamaha running almost any model of Polk Audio speakers is a very nice bang for the buck.
I have klipsh kg4 speakers from 1985 and they are 4ohms and the Yamaha rs700 push them very well
I think this will run old school speakers. I have this beast driving about 7 pairs of speakers around the house, I have all speakers going at the same time and no problems. good power with minimal distortion. /donald
I use the Yamaha R-S700 with 35 year old 4-ohm AR-9's with the drivers refoamed and they sound the very best they ever have. 4 ohm is harder to drive cleanly than 8 ohm. Previously I used a Yamaha M-80 amp and a C-80 pre amp and expected the R-700 to be less. I was wrong and even better at high volume the new Yamaha has even less hum/noise than the M-80, which was the best I'd heard then. 35 years ago the M +C 80 pair cost ten times what the R-S700 cost.
How would I use the CD Direct or Pure Direct input modes on the Yamaha R-S700 (Also on the R-S500 and R-S300, I believe) that bypass the volume control? Where can I find a CD or preferably SACD player with a volume control? If the CD direct and Pure Direct input modes bypass the volume control, what sort of gear could I use with them? I don't understand why anyone would want to listen to everything at maximum volume. My SACD player does not have a volume control, and I do not believe that there are many CD players that do, so I would appreciate it if anyone could describe the utility of those two features.
[ Ray Jul 18, 2016 ]

I purchased this unit in April and have been very pleased with its performance. However, there have been times when it will turn itself off. What is the cause of rs700 to turn off? It drives my turntable, tape deck, CD player and equalizer with no problem, but will turn itself. What is the problem?

Is this compatible with definitive technology subwoofer, the prosub 800?will this run well the definitive technology bp8020st loudspeaker?
[ Jane May 10, 2016 ]
Absolutely; on both counts. The Yamaha offers a dedicated subwoofer pre-amp output for providing signal to a powered subwoofer (like the ProSub800) and will certainly power a pair of the bp8020st tower speakers.Keep in mind; the bp8020st speakers have their own built-in powered subwoofers so you'll need to split the Yamaha's single RCA subwoofer output to provide signal to both towers and/or a separate powered subwoofer:http://www.crutchfield.com/p_703M22F/AudioQuest-FLX-X-RCA-Y-Adapter.htmlI hope that helps! My Bio:http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Can i add a Yamaha power amplifier to this receiver? and if i can how would you connect the amp to the receiver? thank you
[ henry Sep 28, 2015 ]
I haven't done this, and I'm not an expert, but I think you can do this by using the 'Pre Out' outputs on the back panel. As purchased, these are connected to the 'Main In' inputs with two jumpers. If you disconnect these and feed the 'Pre Out' to your power amplifier, it should work -- the receiver would then function as a pre-amp (and tuner), and its amplifier section would be disconnected. You would lose the multi-zone capability, I would imagine, since those are outputs from the main amplifier.
Yamaha R S700 Manual
Hi Henry - yes, you can. It's specifically why I bought this receiver. You would use the Line out inputs on the amp and connect them to the coupler inputs, Main in/Pre out inputs (you have to remove the little plugs off the receiver that are filling the inputs). It's awesome! Good luck :)
I am so sorry I do not know the answer. Call Yamaha, they will tell you.
You can connect the mains and pre-outs to an amplifier and then connect more speakers. It is really a great system !
Why would you. The 100w x 2 is pretty powerful. The answer to your question is yes. There is a 'zone 2' out which you could use to connect to an analog signal via RCA to dedicated amplifier. As far as I can tell looking on the back, there is not a digital out.
What speaker would go well with the R-S700?
[ Todd Aug 10, 2015 ]
I used 2 AW6500 Definative Technology and 2 AW5500 These are outdoor speakers and I installed them under the overhangs as I use them in my wedding venue. Installed over 2 years now and still sound great. I highly recommend the RS-700 as it has worked great for me and Definative make great speakers, you won't be disapointed.Mike A
I really am not an expert, but have heard Bose are the best. Good luck.
I have the S-R700 and pg. 35 in the manual states the Bluetooth Wireless Receiver is YBA-10. I am having a problem finding one. Is this item discontinued? Replaced by another model?
[ Sherry May 16, 2015 ]
I have the rs500. I used the Focal Universal Bluetooth adapter from crutchfield. Plug it into one of the RCA connections ex., line 1, 2, or 3 (or any you are not using). You can then link any Bluetooth enabled device. Set your receiver volume a little louder than normal and use your device to control your listening. My iPad, iPhone work great with it.
I used an old smart phone I had laying around and connected that to the receiver with an audio cable. The phone streams through a wireless connection instead of Bluetooth and works great.
When I asked Crutchfield about a wireless adapter they told me, after some research, that this model doesn't have wireless capabilities. Interesting that the manual would lead you to believe otherwise. If you find a solution, please post. Thanks.
Many new receivers do not offer a tape 2/monitor input for running graphic equalizers. Is it possible to run an eq with this receiver?
[ CJ Moore Apr 19, 2015 ]
You should attach the equalizer to the receiver's tape monitor loop instead of the recorder . Any equalizer you buy should also have a tape monitor loop. You should attach your recorder to the equalizer's tape monitor. The equalizer should have switches that determine whether an equalized signal goes to the recorder. This type of setup goes back decades. A large number of older receivers only had one tape monitor loop.
I'm sorry, your question is too advanced for me. All I can tell is that I am enjoying it and it works well. Good luck.
I have purchased klipsch rf 82 iis that run 150watt rms 600 watt peak each and have a sensitivity of 98 db. This receiver only allows 100 watts per channel. I will be using these speakers in a reasonably sized common room next year and I want to be able to (not that I will) deafen the masses. Will this setup be loud enough for what im looking for?

My Yamaha R-S700 is paired with Polk Audio (2) RTIA7's and (1) PSW125. The room they are in is approximately 15 X 27 and I consider it to be very adequate. When I originally purchased the system I was going to get 4 RTIA7's but after playing it for a few months I found that I did not need 4 of them. If my hearing starts to go because I play this set up too loud then I will purchase 2 more RTIA7's! In conclusion I really enjoy this set up and I would definitely recommend it. My floor shakes when I crank it up and my chandelier moves. Just one thing carefully match up your speakers with the Yamaha R-S700 Crutchfield did a great job form me.
I would think so. I'm not too conversant with the amount of detail you provide, but I never go much past half way up (in volume) with mine. I have 2 RTi A7 Polk Audio floor standing speakers.
With the Klipsch RF82 and the Yamaha R-S700, look like a excellent choice, you will get the highs and lows with the speakers system. The Amount of power you will push out will be less than 20 watts.
Can you use monster cable quick connect banana connectors with the speaker terminals on this receiver?
[ Scott Jul 04, 2014 ]
yes im sure you can. all I realy know that this R S 700 drives my Peavy blackwidow speakers BIG TIME! blow your hair back!!!!!! Russ from Springwater ny
Yes.
Yes, it will accept a banana plug.
You can use standard banana plugs. I would expect the Monster cable plugs are standard, or they wouldn't fit much of anything. You can download the owners manual from usa.yamaha. It's on the support tab of the R-S700 page.
Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.Bi-Wire: Compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A and B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel).Impedance Switch: The R-S700 has an impedance switch, allowing operation with two pair of 6 ohm speakers.Pre Out/Main In Loops: The left and right preamp outputs are connected to left and right main amp inputs, respectively, with U shaped metal jumpers. The jumpers may be removed to facilitate the connection of an equalizer or external amplifier.Phono: The RCA phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) turntable cartridges. If you have a moving coil (MC) cartridge a phono preamp is necessary.Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer.
You can use banana plug connectors on the speaker terminals of the Yamaha R-S700. The instructions are on page 13 of owners manual. Frankly the banana connectors just seem to be a waste of money unless you are using a very heavy gauge wire. It is very easy to connect bare speaker wire to the terminals.
How much bass does it have? And at what frequency? Like, for example, 6 or 10 dB to 50 or 53Hz?

You can use a 3.5 mm Headphone jack to rca (red/white) cable on the RS-700 . Connect the rca connectors to line 3 on the back of the receiver. Select Line 3 with your remote after powering up and you are good to go !
Is it possible to use an aux wire from iPhone to the r-s700 reciever and make it work ? If yes, how ?
I can't answer your question in the detail you have asked but I can say that I have 2 polk audio rtia7 towers and a 12 inch polk audio subwoofer and it rocks my house! My kids can't believe that the cops have not been to my house yet and I have a single family detached home with a good sized yard. The loudest I have played my yamaha rs-700 is +5 on either a CD or a FM station that come in perfectly. One more thing I have never had a stereo that sounded so good in every way. And If I blow up something I'll replace with the same equiptment.
My headphone jack is too small..what can I do?
[ Sharon Jan 20, 2014 ]
Get an adaptor at a local electronics store
I don't have headphones.
Do you still have the package your head phones came in? Most headphones come with a larger jack that threads over the smaller jack. If you no longer have the parts that came with your headphones you might be able to find the larger jack that threads over your headphones small jack at your local electronics store. Were your Head phones designed for an iPad or a laptop? If so, your headphones may not be capable of using a larger Jack. In this case You may want to give thought to buying a headphone set from Crutchfield designed to work with your Yamaha R-S700.
You can try to get a headphone jack adapter. The receiver has a 1/4 inch headphone jack.
I have 4 Rock Solid speakers in my great room (up to 150W into 8ohms) and 2 outside. I have A speakers going into a switch so I can control the great front and back option then B is for outside. Is RS700 right?
[ pdunne Dec 11, 2013 ]
This is very similar to my arrangement. I think the RS700 will work great for you, it sure does for me.
My R-S700 is working great. I have 4 sets of speakers going using a splitter box. Turntable, cd player, DVD player hooked up without any problems. I would not hesitate to purchase this receiver again.

The Yamaha r-s700 has A and B speaker connections, but can it run A and B simultaneously?
[ Ray Dec 04, 2013 ]
Yes it can run both sets of speakers at the same time.
Even though I only have 1 pair of speakers running at this time the,you can run 2 sets at a time . Impedance switch is there in the back . also amp can be bi-wired for low / mid high separations. if you need just a stereo receiver this one will not disappoint for the money. typ yamaha can record on one set of outputs and playback another source thru amp.
Ray - The Yamaha r -s700 can push Speakers A and B simultaneously without any problem. I own the Yamaha r -s700 and I highly recommend the tuner.
Yes. I only have one set of speakers connected to my receiver and have never played two sets of speakers simultaneously. However the buttons for both sets of speakers can be on at the same time. Most receivers with speaker push buttons can play both sets simultaneously. The only thing that you have to worry about is the combined speaker impedance load. This normally is only a problem if the individual speaker impedance ratings are 4 ohms or less.
I have only two speakers connected to my unit; however I checked the owner's manual and it appears that they can all work simultaneously. Two A speakers, two B speakers, and a subwoofer are all shown connected at once. In the diagram the A speakers are larger in size. Hope that helps!
